The American Legion Post 147

August 6, 2018

Fellow Legionnaires of Post 147,

On Thursday November 1, 2018 we will have our annual Membership (Turkey) Dinner.  Doors will open at 4:00 PM with dinner being served again this year by our Ladies Auxiliary Unit around 6:30 PM.  We have a delicious meal planned plus the opportunity to win many cash prizes.

Admission is your 2019 membership card.  Please pay your dues early to avoid standing in line that evening.  Mail or drop off your dues payment at the Post home before October 19th to receive your membership card in the mail in time for the dinner.

PS:  Just a reminder, the Membership (Turkey) Dinner is for paid up members of the American Legion & Sons of the American Legion only. Membership dues must be paid in your primary organization, for example; a Legion member who is also a Sons member cannot attend the function just by paying their Sons dues.

We will need volunteers to take meals to both our shut-ins and our Nursing Home residents. Please contact Lisa if you have time to assist us. She can be reached by calling the Post at 482-3862.

Our membership mission for this year is 632.  This mission is easily achievable with the help of you, our membership.  It’s easy, just ask! You have neighbors, nephews, sons and daughters who are eligible to join this great organization.

Our Post Everlasting honoring all deceased comrades from November 10, 2017 to the present will be conducted on November 12, 2018 at 7PM. Family members and friends are invited to attend the services. Each deceased member’s family will receive a personal letter from our Chaplain Kerry Heichelbech.

Enclosed you will find the Fall Monday Night Meal Schedule and the Fall Cash Raffle tickets. Come support your Post!

We still need help with our Bingo nights.  Couldn’t you give up one Wednesday a month from 6 to 9:30pm to assist us in supporting our community and various veteran charities????

We are opening the kitchen up 2 Saturday nights of the month.  Those Saturday’s will be the wings weekend and the ribs weekend.  Watch for those Saturday nights on our sign out front.

The Post could use help preparing the Christmas Goody Bags for our 81st Annual Children’s Christmas Party.   Preparing the bags will be done on Friday, November 30th starting at 6:00PM at the post.  The Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 2nd at the Black Gym beginning at 12:30PM.   After the party at the gym, we will be visiting some nursing homes.  We will finish up the nursing home visits on Sunday, December 2nd.

Membership dues:  If your dues are not paid by the end of December for the next year you will be considered a "delinquent" member.   If you are considered "Delinquent", you are NOT eligble to play or win any raffles, punch boards or even the "Daily" or "Weekly" books.  We are trying to get all members paid up by December prior to the next year (ie. Pay dues by December 2018 for the next year of 2019).

The Sons of the Legion has changed their meeting date to the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:30PM.  If you are a Sons member, please take time to come to a meeting and see what all they do for the Legionnaires. Membership Cards are in so come in and pay your dues.

At the October 9th Legionnaires meeting, we will be voting on the smoking policy at the club.  We have to do this every 2 years.

A change we are making concering any meals that the post has will now be prepaid.  There will be no paying at the door.  We are doing this because we are paying for meals based on RSVP's.  A whole lot of meals went unclaimed beacuse people that RSVP'd didnt show up but the post still had to pay for the meals.

A Veteran's Book Exchange book shelf has been set up in the Legion - take one leave one sort of thing.   It's located at the entrance to the bar under the white board.

Service Officer Corner:  Just a reminder that if you or any vet you know needs help to contact the Legion for assistance.  There is an active Service Officer at the post, Susan Bramlet - call the post to make an appointment for assistance with a claim, to see if you qualify for a VA card, or any questions you may have.

Veterans Crisis Line - Suicide Prevention 1-800-273-8255 -- 22 Veterans die per day due to suicide.  You are not alone and there is help out there.

If you need any assistance to obtain your DD214 or military records you can go to the National Archives in St Louis at www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-prsonnel

Trivia Question:  When was the American Legion chartered by congress?  Where was the first American Legion held?
